In schools today, wellbeing is a common focus.
We hear terms like mental health, thriving and flourishing on a regular basis. But with all this awareness, there is still uncertainty around what these words really mean and how they should shape our work as educators.
In this episode, I speak with Professor Lindsay Oades, PhD, about the importance of understanding the language we use in wellbeing conversations.
We unpack the difference between mental health and wellbeing, explore the concept of flourishing, and look at the role of wellbeing literacy in education.
This conversation also explores the emotional labour of teaching and why setting clear boundaries is essential for both staff and student wellbeing.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- The difference between mental health, wellbeing and flourishing
- What wellbeing literacy is and why it matters
- How to care wisely and sustainably in emotionally demanding roles
- Why language shapes school culture and impacts both staff and student wellbeing
- How to support others within your professional role
- The importance of promoting flourishing, not just achievement

Why does this conversation matter?
Teaching is deeply relational work. It is built on care, connection and emotional investment. But without clarity, structure and shared language, that investment can become overwhelming. When we take on too much, without the right boundaries or systems, our own wellbeing begins to suffer.
This conversation invites us to reflect on how language influences the way we show up for others and ourselves. It offers educators the tools to support students and colleagues with confidence, clarity and sustainability.
If you’ve ever questioned where your responsibility ends, or how to keep giving without draining yourself, this episode is for you.
You can quote us on that…
“Language heavily impacts our psychological realities.”
Prof Lindsay Oades PhD
“Language use by definition is relational. We use language to relate.”
