Ep 57: Friendship Fires

By Meg | October 21, 2022

Growing up, were you taught friendship skills? Educators and parents today have become more aware of how important it is to teach children friendship skills. With the onslaught of social media and technology, friendships have considerably evolved; but in other ways, they remain the same as when you were young: we all want to get…

Have you noticed that taking care of your wellbeing is hard work?

Over the years, it has become clear that the actions required to help us to feel, function and relate better require effort.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉 It is hard to get to bed when we want to watch one more episode of our favourite show.

👉 It's hard to cook a nutritious meal when we have had a big day.

👉 It's hard to move our body when we don't feel like it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
AND…the alternative… is not taking care of your wellbeing and guess what that is hard work too!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉 It is hard to make good choices when we are exhausted.

👉 It is hard to give to others when we have nothing left to give.

👉 It is hard to sleep when our minds are racing.

Which hard will you choose today?

I am cheering you on!

💭 Do you ever walk into a room worried that you will have no one to talk to?

This was how I was feeling as I walked into the Women In Leadership dinner hosted by the Victorian Catholic Secondary Schools Deputy Principals Association.

I was invited to attend this highly anticipated event as a special guest and I am so glad that I have learned the skill of choosing courage over comfort because it was a fabulous night.

👉 My courage mantra when I am feeling like this is "You'll be glad you did it"

The Sofitel Grand Ballroom was absolutely buzzing and filled with the familiar faces of former colleagues, school leaders that I am currently working with, and Claire Allemand my incredible supervisor from my final teaching placement - almost 20 years ago!

The Brilliant Shelley Ware was the keynote speaker for the evening and generously shared her lived experience and her valuable insights so we can all play our part in creating meaningful change for ourselves and the next generation.

🎧 An unexpected delight of the evening was connecting with a number of big-hearted school leaders that regularly listen to The School of Wellbeing podcast and hearing how the conversations are having a positive impact on their personal and professional lives.

📣 Thank you to the VCSSDPA committee and all involved for making this such a memorable event and I look forward to seeing a few of you in Nagambie our professional learning session - Thrive By Design.

It really goes to show that magic awaits when we have the ability to step (mentally and physically) into the unknown and choose courage over comfort.

💭 I would love to hear from you, what do you say to yourself when you need a little courage boost?

It has been six months since I announced I was writing a book… and I have not written a single word – not one.

And.. I am pleasantly surprised with how much I have learned during this time.

It turns out that writing a book is so much more than writing a book – who would have thought!

The writing is only one piece (a rather large one – that I plan on getting to) of the book puzzle.

While I have not put my fingers on my keypad, the book is marinating away in my mind:

▫ I think about my future book each time I present to a new group and watch closely for the ideas and concepts that land and leave an impression.

▫ I think about my future book each time I walk into a bookshop or receive a new book in preparation for a conversation on The School of Wellbeing.

▫ I think about my future book when I engage in heartfelt conversations after a talk and they ask if I have a book, and I wish I had something to give them to continue the conversation.

▫ I think about my future book and the big-hearted human that will hold it in their hands, feel comforted by my words and be inspired to take deliberate action in their lives – and this gets me so excited that I could actually start writing.

So, if you are wondering how the book is coming along, it is marinating away nicely and I am almost ready to put my fingers on my keypad and get typing.

Thank you for being on this learning adventure with me - your ongoing support and encouragement means the world.

And... a big shout out to @goodcontentkel and the Expert Author Community for your ability to hold space for the creative process and allowing it to unfold in surprising ways.

You never know, six months from now, I might be sharing that I have completed my first shitty draft (thanks Brene), or then again I might not have written a single word, all I know is that one day I will be holding a book in my hands that I have written, that has been published and it will be ready to share with you.

May this post remind you that learning is not a linear process and sometimes the most profound learning happens in the subtle shifts we make in the way we make sense of ourselves and the world around us.
